Can You Get Pregnant While Your Pregnant?
Can you get pregnant while you’re pregnant? While it is extremely rare to become pregnant once you have already become pregnant, it does occasionally happen. This has occurred only a handful of times in medical history, but it has happened. This rarity is called superfetation where a second egg is released and becomes fertilized, then embeds into the uterus to become a second fetus or baby. When this occurs the babies are not twins, but rather siblings of the same age. Twins, which are completely different are when two eggs are released at the same time or an egg splits into two separate babies.
History of Superfetation
The two most recent cases of this rare occurrence happened in 2007 and in 2009 where women had become pregnant twice. The case in 2007 happened in Britain where a woman had become pregnant with two children three weeks apart, one boy and one girl. This was a happy ending even though one baby was three weeks early, but even today her children are both happy and healthy. The 2009 case was yet another beautifully happy ending as an Arkansas woman had become pregnant with her two babies were only two weeks apart. These babies each have separate due dates yet the woman is technically pregnant twice.
While these cases posed little to no danger for the second child, other cases that occurred a long time ago were much more dangerous for the premature baby. Today premature babies have a much greater chance of survival due to the technology that hospitals possess in their maternity wards and NICU. These are not major concerns today for a baby to be a couple weeks early, however there are cases that have occurred further back where the baby was two full months early which may pose problems for their respiratory system.
Chances of Getting Pregnant Once Already Pregnant
It should be understood that the chances of getting pregnant once you are already pregnant is extremely rare and is a 1 in 1 million occurrence. The reality is that you have a better chance of having twins than conceiving once already pregnant. While the conditions involved in getting pregnant once you have already conceived is completely slim and unlikely, you can always talk to your doctor about the chances that this could happen to you or the exact chances that this could occur if you are interested in more information.
